Armed Forces/Veterans Association
Past Present and Future
The Armed Forces/Veterans Association offers support, direction, resources and peer support for all veterans and their families. We connect student veterans and attending family members from all branches of military service with other veterans who have served during times of peace and war.
Mission
The Armed Forces/Veterans Association is a nonpartisan college veteran's club that
provides a safe environment for student veterans to help one another facilitate the
transition from military life tothe college community. We also support Veterans
involved in Chapter 31 vocational rehabilitation program. AVA creates a positive
social network based on fellowship, mentor-ship, and camaraderie. Through
community and campus service, the Armed Forces/Veterans Association works to raise
awareness on veterans issues; therefore, facilitating the growth of a positive and
supportive social environment that will assist all veterans with the successful transition
into civilian life.
The Armed Forces/Veterans Association last semester began an on-going project in which they regularly visited a homeless Veterans shelter in Brooklyn. There they would go and spend time with these down but certainly not out brothers in arms. They enjoyed sharing and trading stories with Veterans from all different eras, including Vietnam and other fellow OIF and OEF veterans. The primary reason for visiting is to show these homeless veterans that there are people out there that care about them and really want them to get back on their feet. Last year culminated with the homeless veterans attending the CUNY Veterans Ball as guests of the John Jay students.
