March 15, 2013
To the John Jay College Community:
The first student activity fee increase took place in 1982. The second increase of the
student activity fee was in 1988. The third student activity fee has finally increased
in 2013, pending Board of Trustee approval.
The student activity fee pays for many extra and co-curricular activities dedicated to the
social, professional, and cultural enhancement of all students. In the past twenty-five
years, the student population has grown, the cost of everything has risen exponentially,
and there are programs that exist today that need funding that did not exist in 1988.
The increase in the student activity fee will provide funding for: an enhanced
commencement, paid student positions in peer mentoring programs, opportunities for
study aboard and conferences for undergraduate and graduate students, professional
development programs, expansion of media services on campus, and so much more.
John Jay College had one of the lowest student activity fees across CUNY. However,
that was changed on March 14, 2013. March 14 is not a day where history has been
changed but a day where our future has a new beginning.
On behalf of Student Council 2012-2013, thank you to all those who have helped us
change history. We could not have made such a big difference without you.
Sincerely,
Mehak Kapoor
